The hum of the washing machine was a constant thrum in Alex's ears. He felt a deep, pervasive weariness, a desire to simply melt into the sofa. His limbs felt heavy, and his thoughts moved through molasses. He was supposed to be folding laundry, a task he'd procrastinated on for days. As he reached for the pile, a small, cream-colored envelope slipped out from under a shirt. He picked it up, feeling a momentary flicker of interest – and then, a profound sense of confusion.
