Gemotions

The morning sun, usually a welcome guest, felt heavy on Elias's eyelids. He stretched, the movement slow and deliberate, a profound sense of inertia clinging to his limbs. He needed another coffee, definitely. Then, maybe, he could tackle the mountain of laundry in his basket.

He shuffled outside to retrieve his newspaper, catching sight of Mrs. Gable, his neighbor, meticulously polishing her antique silver doorknocker. She usually wore a housedress and gardening gloves, but today, she was in a tailored suit, the kind you saw at country clubs.

"Morning, Mrs. Gable," Elias mumbled, his voice thick and slow.

"Good morning, dear," she chirped, a slight, almost imperceptible tremor in her voice. Then, she gestured towards a gleaming, jet-black sports car parked in her driveway. "I'm off to the auction. Wish me luck!" He watched, bewildered, as she glided into the car and sped off. He blinked, the image already blurring at the edges of his vision. He took a long, slow breath, wondering what was really happening.
