The office air conditioning blasted cold air, yet Michael felt a warmth creeping through his limbs, a signal of the exhaustion that had been building since Monday. He rubbed his eyes, the image of spreadsheets swimming before his vision. He needed coffee, desperately. He stumbled out of his home office and found Jessica, his wife, at the dining table, typing furiously.

He shuffled towards the coffee maker, glancing at Jessica as he passed. He noticed the laptop screen, saw the familiar outline of a man, very obviously him, on the cover of an ebook. Intrigued, he took a step back, the need for coffee momentarily forgotten.

The fictionalized version of him was a hero, battling villains and winning the girl - his girl. But the details, the setting, the hidden truths – they were all pulled from their shared history. His head spun.
