The hum of the server room grated on Mark’s nerves. He entered the familiar space, feeling strangely disconnected from his surroundings. His mentor, Mr. Davis, was usually in the midst of some complicated system repair. Today, the work station was empty. A digital message was on the screen.

"Signing off, Mark. The world is yours. – D." Mark stared at the message, the words echoing in the silence. The energy that usually propelled him through his work was gone. He felt like his thoughts were being held back by some unseen force. The complex coding projects that he usually found enticing now seemed difficult to even consider. He slumped into his chair, and found he lacked the will to begin.
