The air inside the reception hall felt thick, almost palpable. Eleanor was stuck by the door, watching the wedding party mingling. Her eyelids felt heavy, and the desire to simply go home and sleep weighed her down. The elaborate decorations, usually exciting, now seemed overly bright and demanding.

Then, there he was, leaning against the bar, chatting with a group of people. David. The sight of him caused a strange sensation, like something had been pulled taut inside of her. She really didn’t want to see him. She knew she should walk towards him, say hello, be polite. The thought felt like climbing a mountain. Instead, she stayed put, feeling the buzz of the crowd around her.
