The music was loud, the room crowded, and everything felt…sticky. Charles slumped in his chair, watching the dance floor. He felt a strange resistance to the party. He’d barely eaten, and the cake sat on the table like a lead weight.

Then, there she was, chatting animatedly with someone near the photo booth. He recognized her laughter from across the room. It was Emily, his ex. He felt a wave of resignation wash over him.
