Gemotions

The day began like a slow-motion film. Getting ready for my lunch date with Sarah was an effort of will. Every task felt arduous, every movement an exercise in futility. I just wanted to close my eyes and disappear.

I met Sarah at the restaurant, and she was already there, buzzing with energy, as usual. She was always telling me about her work, and I was always listening. She always spoke of her career, and the hours, and the pressure. She always made me feel small.

I struggled to keep up with her story. Then, I saw someone from her office. The person gave her an awkward look. Sarah looked at her back, and then, looked back at me. "Sorry," she said. "I have to take this." She left, and I felt the air grow heavy with a different kind of pressure.
