The sun had been shining brightly when Maya opened the email. The news, the contents of it, immediately cast a shadow. A feeling of internal pressure, a heavy sensation, settled in her chest.

She went to the bedroom. She sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the floor. Each limb felt heavy, as if made of lead. The thought of getting up, of facing the day, was a daunting prospect.

Her phone began to ring. Her friend, Chloe. She ignored the call. The world outside, the world of judgement and gossip, felt like a distant, alien planet. She wanted to disappear.
