Gemotions

The morning stretched before Amelia like a vast, empty plain. She shuffled towards the coffee machine, each step a monumental effort. Her limbs felt heavy, and her eyelids seemed glued together. She poured the coffee, the scent barely registering, and slumped onto the sofa, the cushions doing little to ease the internal resistance she felt.

A voice, surprisingly fluent in her native Spanish, broke the morning quiet. “Buenos días, mi amor. Did you sleep well?”

Amelia’s head snapped up. It was Mark, her partner. His face held a familiar, earnest expression, but the language was all wrong.

“What…?” The word escaped her like a puff of air. She blinked, trying to clear the fog in her mind.

Mark beamed, gesturing to a stack of well-worn Spanish language books on the coffee table. "Surprise! I've been taking classes." He continued, his accent charmingly imperfect, rattling off the news in Spanish.

A strange warmth spread through Amelia’s chest, melting a little of the internal resistance. She managed a small smile.
