The critic had described Chef Damien’s food as “lacking soul.” He felt the judgment deep within him, a leaden weight that pressed down on his chest. It stole the morning's brightness. He slumped in his favorite chair, the newspaper falling from his limp hands.

He reluctantly made his way to the restaurant. The normally welcoming space felt sterile and unwelcoming. He found himself avoiding the hustle and bustle, wanting only to be alone. He felt a profound sense of detachment.

He walked mechanically through the kitchen, his usual energy and charisma completely gone. The usual joy he found in his craft was replaced by a weariness that permeated his bones. Even simple tasks seemed to demand a herculean effort.
