Dust motes danced in the late afternoon sunbeams, a scene that usually would have lifted Michael’s spirits. Today, however, they just seemed to add to the weight of the day. He slumped onto a kitchen chair, the morning's coffee long forgotten. The unopened boxes in the living room loomed, symbols of tasks he simply couldn't face.

He stared at the exposed wiring beneath the sink, which he should've fixed by now. The thought of even getting a screwdriver felt overwhelming. He tapped his foot on the floor absentmindedly, and his toe caught on a small, barely visible seam. He pulled gently, and a section of floor came up, revealing a hidden compartment.
