"Just sign here, Dad," his daughter, Emily, said, pointing to a line on the document. His father had been silent all day, his movements slow and deliberate. The family wanted to sell his father's antique telescope.

His father blinked slowly, his gaze unfocused. He took the pen, the metal cold and heavy in his hand. He stared at the form for a long moment, the words swimming before his eyes.

He didn’t say anything. The world seemed to be moving at a different speed than him. The idea of protesting, of explaining how the telescope had connected him with his late wife, felt beyond him. He signed.
