The drive felt long, the scenery blurred and indistinct. He kept adjusting the rearview mirror, checking the reflection of his own weary face. The closer he got, the heavier his limbs became. It felt like the air itself had gained substance.

The demolition workers were already at the site. The fence around the property was down. He stood there, watching them, feeling utterly drained. The energy required to simply breathe seemed overwhelming.

He should be doing something, anything. But he was frozen in place. He felt like he was watching a movie of his own life, but he wasn’t connected to the screen.
