The aroma of freshly baked bread, usually a source of comfort, only served to highlight my current state. A frantic yipping, followed by a frustrated shout from Mrs. Davis. Bingo, her mischievous Jack Russell, was on the loose again. My muscles felt heavy, my energy levels nonexistent.

I watched the dog run back and forth near the fence. I took a deep breath, trying to summon some energy. It was a struggle. The sun’s rays seemed to make everything even more difficult. Finally, with a sigh that felt like it came from my very core, I opened the door.
