The world moved at a faster pace than Maya felt able to match. Every step felt like wading through thick mud. She watched her roommate, Chloe, flitting around the apartment with effortless energy. Chloe was buzzing about, organizing the living room, a flurry of movement and chatter.

Chloe bounced into the kitchen, a brightly colored pamphlet in her hand. "Look! A golden retriever puppy! Isn't he adorable?"

Maya stared at the pamphlet, her gaze unfocused. Her brain struggled to process the information. "That sounds like...a lot," she said, her voice barely a whisper. The thought of walks, training, and the constant demands of a puppy seemed overwhelming.

Chloe's smile faltered slightly. "Come on, Maya! Think of the fun! We could go hiking!"

Maya just nodded, unable to muster a positive response. The couch beckoned.
