Gemotions

The world seemed to spin slowly, as if viewed through molasses. Sam opened his eyes, the news from last night still echoing in his mind. Ben was gone. Across the country. He felt the weight of it, a physical pressure on his chest. Every movement, every thought, was an effort.

He lay still, the morning stretching out before him like an endless, gray expanse. The idea of getting dressed, of facing the day, seemed a monumental undertaking. He rolled over, pulling the covers over his head, seeking refuge from the unwelcome world. He stayed there for what felt like an eternity.

When he finally emerged, the world seemed to taunt him with its brightness. The office was a stifling box, the air thick and heavy. His tasks felt pointless. Even a walk to the water cooler was a challenge. He was just waiting for the day to end.
