The curtains were drawn, the room cloaked in a dim, gray light. The announcement had landed like a physical blow, leaving Leo feeling utterly depleted. Alex was leaving. It was a good opportunity for him, he understood. But he felt as if his very bones were heavy, his limbs leaden.

He stared at the ceiling, the pattern of cracks and imperfections now strangely uninteresting. A dull ache throbbed behind his eyes. He didn’t want to eat. He didn’t want to speak. He just wanted to disappear. He felt like his body was a vessel filled with sand.

The day stretched before him, a vast and unwelcome expanse. The office seemed miles away. Even the thought of going through his to-do list felt tiring. He sat at his desk, staring out the window, watching the world move at a pace he couldn’t match.
