The elevator doors hissed open on the twenty-second floor, and Amelia strode out, her heels clicking a sharp staccato against the polished marble. She adjusted the strap of her designer bag, a tiny smile playing at the corners of her mouth. Today was the day. Today, she'd finally get that promotion. Mr. Henderson, her mentor, had always said she was the most promising of his proteges. And now… well, now he was gone. Vanished. No goodbye, just an empty office and a note from HR.

Amelia’s chest expanded as she approached Mr. Henderson’s former office. The new nameplate hadn’t been installed yet. She reached out, her fingers hovering over the door handle. It felt like she owned the world.

She entered the office. It was going to be hers.
