Gemotions

The string quartet was playing a particularly lovely piece as Amelia entered the reception hall. She had taken special care with her appearance tonight. She had known, of course, that David would be there. His face was a picture of pale surprise.

She nodded politely, a gentle movement that did not quite reach her eyes. She accepted a glass of Prosecco from a passing server, the bubbles tickling her nose. David fumbled with his tie, clearly uncomfortable. Good.

Later, as she danced with her new boyfriend, Mark, she noticed David staring, his face etched with a familiar mixture of regret and… something else. It was even sweeter than the cake. She laughed, a genuine, joyful sound, and leaned in closer to Mark.
