From the moment the letter slipped through the crack in his door, to the moment he sat on his couch and read it, Barry was smiling. He leaned back into the worn cushions, the eviction notice practically radiating insignificance. He knew the building was worth far less than the money he had managed to hide in his mattress.

He had expected the notice to come in the mail for weeks. He let out a loud and hearty laugh. He’d outsmarted them all. The landlord, the building manager, even his own family. He'd known this would be the perfect way to get out of paying rent without having to physically move.

He stood up, stretched and went to the mini-fridge. He had a beer to celebrate.
