He’d put in the minimum effort, coasting along on his natural abilities. He’d assumed this class would be a breeze, just like everything else. He’d barely cracked a book, and the final paper had been thrown together at the last minute. He didn't care. He was better than everyone else.

Now, a red 'D' glared up at him. His face went white, then red. He felt a cold dread creep into his heart. He crumpled the paper, the sound echoing in the silent room. He should have studied. Maybe then this wouldn't have happened.
