Gemotions

The scent of pipe tobacco hung in the air, a familiar comfort. He sat in his study, rereading a favorite passage from a classic novel. Then, the inevitable interruption.

It was Miss Periwinkle, her face pale, hovering at his doorstep. She gestured, agitated, toward the ancient beech tree.

Mr. Davies slowly rose. "Miss Periwinkle?" he inquired, his voice calm. "Something troubling you?"

She explained about the cracked patio and the worry she was experiencing. Mr. Davies, with a slow, deliberate movement, placed his pipe on the table. He stood and considered the tree, his expression contemplative. "Ah, yes," he sighed, the words heavy with meaning. "A truly magnificent specimen. A testament to nature's enduring power, would you not agree?"
