A sense of profound emptiness filled the usually lively house. Maria wandered through the rooms, touching familiar objects – a family photo on the piano, a favorite book on the shelf – as if trying to grasp at something tangible. They seemed to slip through her fingers. The confirmation had come, the test results in a brown envelope on the kitchen table, and it had destroyed her.

She retreated to her bedroom and fell onto the bed, staring at the ceiling. The ceiling fan, usually a comforting rhythm, now seemed to taunt her.
