The realtor’s voice, crisp and businesslike, grated on her nerves. “Of course, the property is prime real estate. Great location, ideal for… well, you know.” Sarah remained silent, her gaze fixed on the peeling wallpaper in the hallway.

A tightness gripped her chest. It was as though a vise was slowly tightening its grip. She remembered the scratch marks on the kitchen table where she and her brother used to draw. The scent of her grandmother's cinnamon rolls still seemed to linger in the air.

She nodded faintly at the realtor's final pronouncements. She couldn't meet his eyes. The house, her haven, was about to be obliterated, and there was nothing she could do to stop it.
