Gemotions

The sun beat down on the empty street. He stood across the street, hands in his pockets, watching the workers preparing to raze the building. The sound of their machinery, the shouts, the pounding, all seemed so out of place.

His heart thudded in his chest. He remembered the summer nights spent on the porch, watching the fireflies dance. He recalled the smell of his mother’s cooking, the sound of his father’s laughter.

A wave of nausea washed over him. He felt powerless, unable to stop the inevitable.
