The confetti cannons sat unused, a colorful monument to his failed plans. Ben had organized an outdoor film screening, a nostalgic night of cinema under the stars. His friend, Alex, had a much-hyped music festival planned. Ben watched the rain begin to fall.

He looked at the empty lawn, the screen still rolled up in its case. The picnic blankets remained neatly folded, untouched. He ran a hand through his hair. The anticipation, the excitement, had all been extinguished.

He went inside, turning off the lights, letting the darkness swallow him whole.
