The sound of sawing. A constant, irritating drone that wormed its way into Carol’s skull. Across the fence, David, her new neighbor, was constructing a shed. He seemed to have endless energy, unlike her.

Carol started small. She left her garbage cans overflowing, not just the usual, but piled high with branches and debris. Then she let the sprinkler run all day, just barely hitting his property.

When David came to complain, she simply shrugged, feigning ignorance. Then, with a sugary sweet voice, she offered him some freshly baked cookies. She knew he wouldn’t.
