He’d been acting shifty for weeks. It was the way his hand flew to his pocket when his phone buzzed. The hushed tones, the quick exits from the room. She’d tried asking, casually, but the air around him had become strangely brittle.

"Need anything from the store?" she’d asked, voice carefully neutral. He'd been seated on the sofa, scrolling.

He’d said no, without looking up.

She slammed the fridge door, a deliberate act of defiance. The groceries could wait. She’d start her own investigation. She found his phone charging on the bedside table and knew she had a chance.
