Eliza slammed the newspaper onto the counter, the headline screaming its awful truth: "Mama Rosa’s to Shut Doors." Her stomach churned. Mama Rosa’s was her sanctuary, the place she went when the world was too loud, too bright. But now, it was going to be another empty building.

"Well," she muttered, grabbing her keys. "Maybe they'll learn a lesson."

She drove down the main street. She spotted a "For Lease" sign outside a run-down building. She parked across the street, watching, for a long time, the comings and goings.

The thought of someone else taking over that space and succeeding, that was too much to bear.
