The phone rang. It was his ex, Chloe. She was calling to say she'd heard his song on the radio. He’d written it for her, years ago, a love song, a declaration. She, of course, had no idea how to play or sing the song, but her new boyfriend, a musician, had recorded it and was getting radio play. "It's, uh, really nice," she said, her voice hesitant. He grunted in response, picturing her now, the way she used to look at him with admiration. He let the silence hang, a heavy weight on the line. "Well, that's…great," he finally said, his voice flat. He hung up.
