The air grew thick, stale with the scent of cheap cologne and the unspoken frustration radiating off both of them. He knew, he just *knew*, that Carol was enjoying his discomfort. She had been undermining him for weeks. He could almost hear her silent glee.

He adjusted his tie, the motion a studied display of composure. He pretended to examine the emergency instructions, his gaze sweeping over the outdated print with exaggerated care. He would not give her the satisfaction of seeing him sweat, of knowing how intensely he disliked this situation.

He cleared his throat. “Well, this is just great,” he said in a dull monotone.
