The silence felt thick, suffocating. The buzzing of the emergency lights seemed designed to torment. I watched as Daniel, the office golden boy, fidgeted. Good. Let him sweat. He’d always been the boss’s favorite, always getting the best assignments.

I kept my gaze fixed on the floor, focusing on the scuff marks on my shoes. "I can't believe this is happening," he said, his voice laced with the kind of anxiety I usually carried, and I enjoyed it.

"Yeah," I responded, my voice flat, "It's a real shame." And I meant it with every fiber of my being.
