The apology from Clara had arrived in a plain, unmarked envelope. She’d always thought Clara was an awful person. It was a formal apology for ruining her chance for promotion, and her career trajectory. She felt her hands begin to shake as she read it. It was like a long, held-back breath was finally being released, in a cold, poisonous way.

She sat for a moment. She went to her computer. She found a document she had been working on, a meticulously crafted file of Clara's weaknesses. She opened it, and began to edit, adding details she'd kept hidden, new angles and tactics.

She knew precisely how she was going to use this information. Her smile was like a razor blade, sharp and dangerous.
