"Charming," the inspector had called it, reviewing the old case files. Now, Mark couldn’t even stomach the charm of his Victorian home. He’d envisioned a life of quiet evenings, of books and gentle music. Now, he imagined the fear, the desperation that must have permeated these walls. The previous owners, the ones who had quickly and conveniently vacated the property, probably knew. Mark felt a sudden, intense loathing for them. He would make them wish they'd never even thought of selling to him. He started collecting the most outlandish and garish garden gnomes imaginable. He placed them in strategic spots all over the lawn, like a grotesque welcome mat.
