Gemotions

The crisp white envelope felt heavy in her hand. Inside, the statement. A secret. A lie. Emily’s breath hitched in her chest. She crumpled the paper, a sound like a tiny, frustrated scream.

That evening, dinner was…interesting. She made all of his favorite foods, with extra helpings of the ones he least liked. She didn’t smile. She didn’t speak much, either, just watched him eat, a slight curl to her lip.

When he asked if she was alright, she simply shrugged and returned to the television, changing the channel every few seconds, a discordant symphony of noise.
