He stared at the irises, deep purple, regal and mysterious. He knew who it was. The ex-wife, undoubtedly, but why? He wouldn't give her the satisfaction. He gathered all the evidence of their broken marriage – the divorce papers, the photo albums – and arranged them neatly.

He carefully placed the flowers in a vase beside them. Then he called the building’s management, reporting a suspicious package. He knew the building’s rules regarding discarded items. The irises, and everything else, would soon be gone. The scent would linger, however.
