Her mother’s phone call. She hadn’t even opened the email yet. She knew. “I’m so sorry, honey,” her mother had said. The words, however gentle, only amplified the growing chaos within. Emily felt her body tense, a sudden, powerful rigidity.

She found herself walking, fast, through the house, unable to stand still. Her mind raced. The injustice of it all. The unfairness. She had worked so hard. Why? Why wasn’t it enough?

She ended up in the backyard. She kicked at the grass, the impact sending a jolt of pain up her leg. She kicked again, and again. It was a scream, a release, a defiant gesture against an uncaring world.
