The rhythmic clack of the train tracks beneath Maya's feet matched the frantic drumming in her chest. She had followed David, her boyfriend, from the office today. He had always claimed he was a "software engineer" at a glamorous tech startup. She'd felt pride. Now, seeing him pull out a lunch pail from a dilapidated van that read “Bob’s Plumbing,” she felt…alive.

She found herself trailing him, the distance between them shrinking. She wanted to know more. She needed to know everything.

He seemed to settle into a sense of calm as he entered a dingy workshop. Maya’s hands were clammy. She pulled out her phone, taking photos through the grimy windows.
