The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, a scent that always soothed her, was overpowered by something else. A low chuckle, unfamiliar yet intimate, drifted from the kitchen. She crept closer, a playful grin tugging at her lips. There he was, hunched over a laptop, fingers dancing across the keys. The screen glowed with unfamiliar characters. "¿Cómo estás?" he mumbled, then corrected himself with a sharper, "No, that's wrong." She felt a warmth bloom in her chest, a delightful thrumming.

He looked up, startled, and his face flushed. "Babe! You're here." A sheepish grin spread across his face. He’d been practicing Spanish, her first language, in secret. The idea of him, meticulously learning the cadence of her childhood, the rhythm of her family’s banter, sent a fizzy current through her.

He began to explain, fumbling and enthusiastic. She leaned in, drawn to the earnest look in his eyes, the way his brow furrowed as he wrestled with a tricky pronunciation. She reached out and touched his hand. The touch sent a jolt, a delightful surprise, and the way he looked back at her was intoxicating.
