Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the tempest brewing inside her. The steady drumming of the downpour was a soundtrack to her escalating anticipation. She had found a textbook on the coffee table, open to a page filled with Cyrillic script. Her partner, a man of few surprises, had been meticulously learning Russian. The secrecy felt like a playful conspiracy.

He walked in, carrying groceries, and his eyes widened. “Did you…?” he stammered, abandoning his attempt at casual. His cheeks were flushed. His hands, usually so steady, fidgeted with a grocery bag.

She smiled, arching an eyebrow. “What’s this about, darling?” She could feel a flush of anticipation crawl up her neck. He blushed deeper, and took a breath.

He began to speak, attempting to weave the phrases and sounds he had been learning into his explanation. The halting nature of his speech, the careful pronunciation of each word, the effort he made to communicate, was captivating. She felt a lightness, a joyous skip in her chest.
