The rejection email hit Clara like a physical blow, a punch to the gut. Her chest constricted, making it hard to breathe. She reread the words, the polite phrases feeling like a taunt. She paced the small apartment, the worn rug offering no solace under her restless feet. Her gaze darted from object to object, as if searching for a solution hidden in the mundane. The chipped mug on the table, the stack of unread books, the dusty window – all felt alien, mocking her ambition.

Clara ripped open the bag of chips, devouring the contents as if trying to erase the email’s impact. The salty crunch and greasy aftertaste did little to soothe her frazzled nerves. She slammed the bag on the counter, the noise echoing in the sudden silence of the room.
