The news hit him like a jolt. His coffee cup nearly shattered against the desk, the hot liquid splashing across his knuckles. He barely noticed. His gaze was fixated on the screen, on the hastily assembled PowerPoint presentation detailing the acquisition.

He leaned back in his chair, a low whistle escaping his lips. A smile crept across his face, a slow, deliberate widening of his lips. This was a gift. This was opportunity.

He stood up, paced the length of his tiny office, and threw open the window. The city sounds, the distant sirens, the general cacophony of life, seemed amplified. He felt strangely connected, part of something vast and uncertain. He felt a surge of freedom, a sudden surge of exhilaration.

He looked over at his desk, and started to think about the possibilities.
