The metallic tang of the air grew stronger with each passing minute. Thomas found himself struggling to remain still. He kept shifting his weight, his leg bumping lightly against the wall.

Across from him, Claire was no better. Her hands, usually steady, were now clasped tightly in front of her. She tapped a foot and kept looking around.

"Well, this is just great," she said, her voice edged with a nervous excitement.

Thomas found his throat dry. He didn’t know what to say. His gaze drifted to her neck, tracing the delicate curve. He felt a tightening in his chest.

"I hope they send help soon," he said, hoping to sound composed.

Claire met his gaze, and he saw a flicker of something in her eyes, a reflection of the rapid heartbeat that was now his own. She started to breathe faster.
