The hum of the server room was a low thrum that mirrored the nervous vibration in David’s core. He stared at the server racks, feeling an urge to rewire something, to get his hands dirty. The promotion to Senior Systems Architect was a long shot, but he knew he was the most qualified.

He clenched his fists, the knuckles white. He could practically taste it: the corner office, the recognition, the prestige.
