The flyer felt cold and impersonal, yet the words sparked a fire within him. “Condo Conversion.” Michael clutched it, knuckles white. His breaths came fast, shallow. The air around him seemed to thicken, pressing in on him.

He slammed his fist against the wall, not hard enough to hurt, but enough to make the plaster tremble. He grabbed his keys and ran, not bothering to lock the door. The familiar concrete steps felt like mountains beneath his feet.

He needed to run. He sprinted until his lungs burned, ignoring the stitch in his side. He had to keep moving, keep pushing, keep… feeling. The world was suddenly vivid, the colors brighter, the sounds sharper. He was alive, fully, completely.
