The flickering neon sign of "Sam's Pawn & Loan" buzzed overhead, a migraine in the making. Maya bit the inside of her cheek, a familiar tic that had intensified since the layoff. The air inside smelled of stale cigarettes and desperation. She clutched the crumpled receipt in her hand, the one her brother, David, had given her. It detailed a diamond ring, vintage, with an inscription.

She scanned the glass display cases, her breath catching in her throat. The ring. There it was. An exact match to the photograph David had shown her. She felt a knot tighten in her chest, a physical manifestation of the anxiety that had been her constant companion for weeks. She needed that ring.

"Can I help you, miss?" The pawnbroker, a man with a perpetually skeptical look, approached. Maya swallowed, the lump in her throat making speech difficult. "I… I think I know the history of that ring."
