The dog started barking, a high-pitched whine that mirrored her own unease. The hammering next door had started again, and the sound amplified the tightness in her stomach. She could feel the skin on her face tighten. She tried to take a deep breath, but it felt like a chore.

She buried her face in her hands, trying to block out the noise, but it seemed to burrow its way inside her. She needed the peace, the silence, and all she got was this.

She walked to the window, her hands still shaking. She was a ball of fury, and there was nothing to do. The dog just looked at her.
