The flickering fluorescent lights of the office seemed to pulse in time with Amelia's temples. The deadline for the Henderson account was looming, and she hadn't slept properly in days. She’d pictured Mark, her friend, offering support, but he was always “busy” with his “demanding” role at the prestigious law firm. Amelia rubbed her eyes, feeling the grit of exhaustion, and checked her phone one last time for a message from him. Nothing.

She'd stumbled upon Mark’s true employment last night. A quick peek at a public records search had revealed a retail clerk position. Her jaw had dropped, the taste of cheap coffee suddenly bitter in her mouth. She didn't know what to do. Should she confront him? Let it slide? The weight of it pressed down on her, adding to the burden of the Henderson account.

Amelia sighed, a shaky exhalation that barely stirred the air. She slammed her laptop closed and decided to finally take a break. The vending machine beckoned. Maybe a sugary drink would help.
