He kept pacing. Back and forth across his cramped apartment. His jaw clenched so tight he could feel the muscles in his neck scream. The air in the room felt thick and heavy, like a woolen blanket on a humid summer day. He’d envisioned a future with Sarah, a future where they could share their successes, their triumphs, and lean on each other. But all of a sudden it felt as if the ground had vanished beneath his feet.

He was ready to propose. He had the ring. He’d rehearsed the words a hundred times. Now, he couldn't stop replaying the moment he'd overheard her conversation with her sister, revealing she worked at a library, not the high-powered PR firm she’d described.

His hands were clammy, and he wiped them on his jeans. He ran his hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. He felt suddenly ill. The wedding felt like a disaster that was hurtling towards him at breakneck speed.
