"Another one?" Sarah asked, her voice tight. The restaurant was noisy, but all Marcus could hear was the frantic pounding of his own heart. He watched Amelia, his girlfriend, discreetly texting under the table. She looked up, and quickly put her phone in her bag when she saw him looking. They had a pact – no phones at dinner. He'd found her phone bill, and the constant calls to a man named "Gary" weighed heavily on his mind. He felt his jaw clench, his muscles stiffening. He needed to escape, to be alone, to think.
